Parish Path Group A Stroll into summertime The countryside surrounding the village is accessible by a large number of attractive footpaths. The nature of these paths is as varied as the ground they cover, passing through open field to forest within a few miles. There are paths suitable for a gentle stroll, while the more adventurous will find a challenge in store further afield. The Parish Path Group (PPG) intend to publish details of many of these paths and we begin with a circular tour suitable for all the family. Starting from the Village Hall, the route (approx. 4.5Km, 2.8miles) that, apart from a short field section is on hard ground with no styles or gates. An alternative, slightly shorter route over soft ground, involving a footbridge and gates may be taken. Leave the Village Hall, marked 13 on the map, turn left and proceed westward down the High Street. Passing the old Tythe Barn on your right now tastefully restored into two dwellings, turn left at the old red telephone box, along the picturesque village green and into Park Lane. Once past the houses good views of the village and Pury End can be seen from the open road. At the end of Park Farm Lane turn left onto The Grafton Way skirting the field, through the gateway at the corner of the field and turn left onto the concrete road. Italian Prisoners laid this road during the Second World War. You are now entering an area where partridge & hares are often seen in the adjacent fields. Follow the concrete road up the hill past the old barns, which have seen better days, until you reach Stollage Road. Turn left onto this quiet country road for approx 1Km, 5/8mile, until you reach a fingerpost on your left. At this point you have a choice of routes. For the full walk continue along the road, for details of the alternative route over soft ground see below. Continuing on the metalled road it is easy to imagine being back in time on this typical “Old English” highway. Pass through the very attractive Plumpton End and precede uphill along the ancient, sunken road to Doctors Green. Turn left onto the High Street and enjoy the walk back to the Village Hall. Alternative Route Turn left off the road at the finger post, through the gate and follow the green lane through the fields. This takes you over a stream (0.6m, 23.5” wide bridge) and up a short rise through open fields. Turn right along the back of the gardens then left through the gap in the houses and left again into Lumber Lane. After a sharp right hand bend turn right up the newly constructed steps and walk through Spinnal’s Field to the Village Hall. Route approx 4.5 Km 2.8m taking 1hr to 1hr 15mins Alternative route approx 3.7Km 2.3m taking 50mins to 1hr 5mins June 2007
